Last year was one of the most difficult for mobile phone manufacturers. The pandemic, component shortages and other issues have devastated the market in 2022. However, companies managed to introduce several new interesting technologies that promise to become key in 2023.
Without further ado, let's move on to a review of the technologies that will appear in the new iPhone and Android smartphones.

Own processors
Mobile phone manufacturers do not really like to invest in the development of their own processors, because there are Qualcomm and MediTek, which satisfy the needs of most market players.
Huawei was the first Chinese brand to focus on its own chips. However, after US sanctions, other Chinese firms took its place and made good progress in the areas of image processing coprocessors, charging technologies and neural computing.

OPPO has the Marisilicon X and Marisilicon Y, Xiaomi has the Surge C1, and Vivo has the latest V2 chip. Although these chips are rarely taken into account by ordinary users, they significantly improve key smartphone technologies, such as photo quality or charging speed. In 2022, the development of this area will only intensify, and coprocessors will migrate from the premium segment to smartphones with a more affordable price.
Satellite messages
Satellite messaging is another feature that hit the market in 2022. Huawei and Apple already have new generation flagship smartphones that support this feature.
Direct connections to satellites allow mobile phones to send emergency messages when there is no Wi-Fi coverage or cellular network access. Now our attention is focused on Motorola. The company, in collaboration with MediaTek, promises to introduce a smartphone that can not only exchange messages, but also offer a full-fledged satellite communication function.
Accident detection
In addition to satellite messages, another technology coming to the new iPhone 14 is car accident detection.
According to an official statement from Apple, the iPhone 14 series phones are equipped with several sensors, such as an accelerometer with acceleration up to 256g and a gyroscope with wide dynamic range, which can detect accidents and accidents, after which the smartphone automatically contacts emergency services and tells them the location of the victim.
Ray tracing
Samsung and AMD's new chips for the Galaxy S22 will support ray tracing in games. Most PC gamers are very familiar with it, as it has been widely used on consoles and PCs for several years.

The feature appeared on mobile devices only recently and has not yet reached its full potential. Currently, only MediaTek Dimensity 9200 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 chips support ray tracing in hardware. This technology significantly improves the quality of graphics in games, in addition, it can be used in other areas, for example, video processing, virtual reality, etc.
Variable Aperture Lenses
Last year, Oppo Find X6 Pro and Huawei Mate 50 were released, the cameras of which are equipped with variable aperture lenses, like traditional cameras. When shooting in Pro mode, it allows you to manually adjust the depth of field to create natural background blur. In automatic mode, the smartphone adjusts the aperture itself, depending on environmental conditions.
Fast charging over 200W
In 2022, mobile phone brands continued to develop fast charging. In the first half of the year, Realme GT Neo3 debuted with 150W wired charging. This was a new world record, but it did not last long.
The vivo iQOO 10 series was officially launched in July, with the Pro version debuting with 200W fast charging that can fully charge the 4,700mAh battery in just 10 minutes.
The Redmi Note 12 Explorer Edition offered 210W fast charging in an industry first. This is currently the fastest charging speed among production smartphones, but there is no doubt that this record will be broken in 2023.
1" camera sensors
In recent years, smartphone photography has become a testing ground where manufacturers deploy new technologies and test how far mobile photo quality can go.
Several brands entered the market with one-inch cameras in 2023. Xiaomi 12S Ultra made a splash with the Sony IMX989, and Vivo has the X90 series, which also uses this sensor. Don't expect 1-inch sensors to appear in budget smartphones, a very expensive pleasure. But top-end flagships from leading manufacturers will certainly receive such cameras. The only exception may be conservative Apple, which will want to thoroughly test and refine the innovation before introducing it into its iPhones.
