Reasons that reduce the health of our eyes when using a smartphone

Categories

Even at the start of the massive development of technology, doctors unequivocally confirmed the harm to health caused by personal computer monitors - problems with vision, back, neck, headaches. Research suggests that regular use of smartphones causes no less harm, and even more in terms of impact on eye health. There is a steady trend showing that in just a couple of decades, the category of citizens 40+ can easily reach a point where at least 50% will have vision problems due to constant use of smartphones.

The reasons that reduce the health of our eyes when using a smartphone are as follows:

     Harmful effects of emitted blue light;
     Eye strain and fatigue.

It is important to understand the causes and impact of the above factors:

     "Blue color". The screens of our gadgets emit a full spectrum of colors, however, blue radiation is the shortest wavelength, consisting of energetically charged photons. Rays emanating from the blue spectrum have a focus directly in front of the retina, so you need to strain your eyes to get the focus of the image, in addition, this blue radiation can disrupt the retinal receptors;

     A small distance between the eyes and the display, creating additional tension in the eye area;

     The movement of our eyes, limited by the display area, does not contribute to their necessary mobility. If in ordinary life, we look into the distance and our eyes are in constant movement and changing viewing angles, looking at distant and close objects, examining the details of the surrounding world, then, when viewing information on a smartphone, our eyes focus on only one small place, equal to the screen size;

     Bright backlight. Again, if in everyday life we avoid bright light sources, such as looking at the sun or an electric lamp, then, in the case of a display, we often do not notice that it has too bright a backlight, thereby exposing our eyes to serious strain . Colossal stress is aggravated when viewing information on a screen in a dark room. Bright light forces us to peer at the display, so our eyelids begin to blink less often, and, over time, dry eyes develop, and the situation is aggravated by dry air, often found indoors. In turn, dry eyes can be the beginning of serious eye diseases, being a deviation from the normal functioning of the visual organs;

     Small fonts on the screen only increase eye strain.

Smartphones.jpgThe passion for smartphones inevitably increases the number of patients with myopia, and eye strain is the main factor contributing to this. The development of farsightedness, and, in difficult cases, the subsequent development of cataracts and glaucoma at an older age, is also not uncommon.

We should not discount problems with the cervical spine, because when operating our smartphone, in most cases, we have a certain downward tilt of the neck, and this tilt is static, that is, the neck remains in one position for too long, increasing the risks of developing osteochondrosis.

Each user can reduce the harm caused by frequent interaction with a smartphone with the help of recommendations:

         When viewing information on your smartphone screen for a long time, take a 10-minute break every 45-55 minutes, and during this time, devote time to gymnastics and your eyes will be grateful and will delight you in adulthood. The gymnastics is very simple - move your gaze to a point 3-4 meters away from you and hold it for 20 seconds, do this several times in different directions. Next, turn your gaze to distant objects and change them, and, of course, standard circular rotation of the pupils, moving them up, down, left, right, with periodic changes in intensity and holding the position of the pupils at a certain point, are extremely useful.

         If you are often in a room with dry air, which is especially important in winter, use a humidifier; in addition to the fact that it will have a beneficial effect on the eyes, it will be very beneficial for the skin, respiratory system, and, accordingly, the whole body.

         Increase the font size on your phone. This function is present in the settings of any modern device.

         Adjust screen brightness. It's not a good idea to use 100% display brightness all the time. There can be two approaches here. The first is to set the screen brightness level automatically, but at the same time, the correct operation of the automatic setting depends on the specific device, and often may not have the expected effect. The second option would be to manually set the screen brightness to a comfortable minimum level.

         Dimmed screen and evening mode/reading mode. Try installing a dark, black screen theme, which was available a few years ago. This will reduce the strain on your eyes when you are in the device menuata.

     And, pay attention to the ability to select the type of screen backlight. Manufacturers of smartphones and OS offer to use warmer tones for backlighting the screen; usually this option is available in the settings of most latest phones, which will be better than the standard backlight mode for your eyes.

         Blue filter. Adjusting the spectrum of the “blue” tint for the screen helps create a soft, warm tone that is more preferable to our eyes. Editing this filter is possible in the menu settings of some devices, or by installing a special program for this adjustment. However, the blue spectrum is needed for the final correct display of natural colors, therefore, for example, when viewing photographs, many will prefer to do this in the established initial parameters, and, in the case of normal use of the gadget for viewing information on websites, the level of blue color is quite can be adjusted.
